A geographical imperative lies at the heart of every struggle for social justice; if justice is embodied, it is then therefore always spatial, which is to say, part of a process of making a place.

Service
Service has had a profound impact on my personal and professional growth and continues to. Akin to my research and teaching, my service focuses on equity and justice. Reciprocal and liberating partnerships, dialogic consciousness raising (Paris & Winn, 2014), and engaging in the work with and alongside others (Kinloch & San Pedro, 2014) reverberate through my service commitments.
Expanding Discourses and Transgressing Contexts
Service symbolizes opportunities to cultivate partnerships and co-construct knowledge within professional organizations. To do that, I try to transgress borders and boundaries (hooks, 1994) across multiple professional organizations. Considering national service, I am a member of American Educational Research Association (AERA), TASH, American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD), and Society for Disability Studies (SDS). Currently, I am an SDS Board Member. I also serve as Policy & Publications Committee Chair for SDS. I have been a member of the POOR Magazine Admin Team since 2021. Considering statewide service, I am a member of the Special Education Coalition of Michigan and a member of the Michigan Parent, Advocate and Attorney Coalition (MiPAAC). Considering local service, I am a member of the Education Action Committee of Detroit Disability Power. At Wayne State University, I am a member of the Constellation Framework Committee within the Teacher Education Division. I also advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
Service as Participatory Community-Engaged Scholarship
My future service goals concentrate on maintaining my commitments to service as dialogic consciousness raising and purposeful engagement with and alongside others for equity, justice, and liberation. I aim to do so with humility and care, learning and reflecting along the way. One specific service goal focuses on intentional, community-engaged scholarship and critical, participatory research (Smith, 2012; Tuck &McKenzie, 2015) with local schools and community members seeking to transform schools with students, families, and communities who are multiply-marginalized by intersecting systems of oppression. Here, the focus is on the lived experiences of the community and the funds of knowledge (Moll et al., 1992) and cultural wealth (Yosso, 2005) sustained there. I believe reflection and action that is grounded and sustained within the community holds emancipatory and constructive energy. It is here where true partnerships can thrive.
